For a landlocked nation, energy security is often shaped not only by the availability of fuel but by the reliability of the infrastructure used to deliver it. In Southern Africa, the Kingdom of Eswatini is exploring a new infrastructure solution that could reshape its fuel supply network — a dedicated pipeline connecting the country to Mozambique’s Port of Maputo.
The proposed pipeline, announced by Mozambique’s state-owned Ports and Railways company (CFM), is currently undergoing technical and economic feasibility considerations. If developed, the project would create a direct petroleum products corridor between the Port of Maputo and Eswatini, replacing part of the fuel volumes currently transported by road tankers.
Beyond being a transportation project, the proposed link represents a strategic move toward improving supply reliability, reducing logistics costs, and strengthening regional energy resilience.
Addressing Eswatini’s Fuel Supply Vulnerabilities
Eswatini’s energy landscape is heavily dependent on imported petroleum products, with the country relying on regional neighbours and transport corridors to meet domestic demand. As a landlocked country, fuel security is closely tied to the efficiency and resilience of these supply routes.
